Polishing is the step everyone pictures: a machine pad on a lens, a hazy headlight turning clear in real time. It is genuinely satisfying, and on its own it is also the reason so many headlights look great for a month and then look worse than before.
Polishing removes material. Once it removes the last of the factory UV layer, the bare polycarbonate underneath is exposed to Colorado sunlight with no protection at all — and it oxidizes faster the second time.

The four stages of a professional job
1. Preparation
The lens is washed, dried and masked so compound and sanding slurry never touch paint, rubber trim or textured plastic — the surfaces that stain permanently.
2. Multi-stage wet sanding
A grit progression (roughly 800 up through 3000) removes the failed coating and oxidation. Each grit exists to erase the scratch pattern left by the previous one. Skipping steps is what makes DIY results look milky.
3. Machine polishing
A compound and a rotary or dual-action pad take the finest sanding pattern down to optical clarity. Heat control matters here: polycarbonate can be scorched by a pad held in one spot.
4. Ceramic UV sealant
The step that decides how long the result lasts. A dedicated lens coating replaces the factory UV layer that was removed and is rated up to three years in Colorado conditions.
Polishing vs. buffing vs. restoration
The three words get used interchangeably, but they describe different amounts of work. Buffing and polishing are the same mechanical step. Restoration is the whole sequence, sealant included.

Why altitude changes the math
