Headlight lenses stopped being glass decades ago. Modern housings use polycarbonate — light, impact-resistant, and shaped into curves glass could never hold — with a thin factory hard coat sprayed on to protect it from ultraviolet light.

That hard coat is the part that fails. When it goes, sunlight reaches the raw plastic, and the surface begins a chemical breakdown that shows up as yellowing, then cloudiness, then a chalky texture you can feel with a fingertip.

Why polycarbonate yellows

Ultraviolet light breaks the polymer chains at the surface of the lens. The byproducts of that reaction absorb blue light, which is what your eye reads as yellow. It is a chemical change in the material, not a film sitting on top of it.

Heat from the bulb accelerates it from the inside, and airborne grit sandblasts microscopic pits into the surface that give UV even more area to attack.

How many restorations can one lens take?

Each restoration removes a small amount of material, measured in microns rather than millimeters. A typical lens can be restored several times across a vehicle's life without any structural concern.
