WHY THE UV SEAL MATTERS

Headlight lenses are polycarbonate. They come from the factory with a clear UV-protective coating baked on. Sun exposure breaks that coating down, which is why lenses turn yellow and cloudy. When you sand or polish a headlight — whether at home or in a shop — you remove the failed factory coating along with the oxidation. What protects the lens from the next round of UV damage is whatever you put on top.

Consumer kits ship with a wipe-on sealant or a clear spray. Professional restoration uses a two-part aerospace-grade UV coating that chemically bonds to the lens and cures hard. That is the entire difference in how long results last.

The process

WHAT MULTI-STAGE RESTORATION ACTUALLY DOES

  • Wet sanding through 4–6 grits. We start at 800 and step up through 1500, 2000, 2500, and 3000. Each grit removes the scratch pattern of the last one. DIY kits usually skip straight from a coarse pad to polish, which leaves haze trapped in the lens.
  • Machine compound and polish. A rotary buffer with cutting and finishing compounds removes the final sanding marks and brings the lens to optical clarity. Hand-polishing in a driveway can't generate the same heat and consistency.
  • Two-part UV coating, cured. The bonding agent and UV blocker are applied in controlled coats, then flash-cured. This is the layer that protects the lens for years rather than weeks.
  • 30–60 minutes per vehicle. Done in your driveway or parking lot. No taking time off to drive to a shop.

When DIY actually makes sense

If your headlights are only lightly hazed, you plan to sell the car within a few weeks, and you accept that the haze will be back, a DIY kit can buy you a short-term cosmetic win.
